Metocean forecasts as component in reducing shipping emissions
Vessel optimization is built upon the compound benefits of data. And at NAPA we’re constantly looking for new sources of reliable data that we can use to improve the results we can achieve for ships using NAPA’s voyage optimization software.
NAPA has been working with Tidetech for many years, and its tidal, wave and wind data has helped us to deliver a system that can quickly and accurately model performance in any weather conditions. With weather effect normalization we can also model the effect loading draft, trim, engine usage and other relevant factors. First step in analyzing hull performance or optimizing future voyages is thorough understanding of how vessels behave in different conditions.
From the immediate, low-cost benefits of voyage optimization using ocean and tidal currents for speed and route optimization, to the marked benefits in reduced fuel, minimized time at sea and lower emissions, accurate metocean data has provided a valuable return on investment for us.
Most importantly, however, the reception has been equally positive from the end users. Shipowners understand the difference we’re making, and recognize that the results are making a difference to their bottom line. This capability is today available to all shipowners without the need for costly and laborious on-board installations through NAPA’s cloud-based web service for fleet operational insight, NAPA Fleet Intelligence.
“Napa was an early adopter of Tidetech” says Tidetech Managing Director Penny Haire “they were the first solution provider to make full use of our high resolution, accurate tidal and ocean current data and we are delighted that our partnership has resulted in improved efficiency and fuel savings for their customers. Going forward we are working in close partnership with Napa to provide some exciting new longer term forecast products that will allow the window for route optimisation to be pushed further out.”
Productivity, efficient operations, transparency and close scrutiny of costs are more important than ever. NAPA Fleet Intelligence combines ship design information, remote-sensed data such as AIS, chart data and real-time environmental data with algorithms and hydrodynamic calculations developed by NAPA’s in-house data and analytics experts to provide quick and easy access to performance monitoring information.
